Those Golden Years

There was some chatter about retiring administrators and the difference between 3 and 5 years.  Here's the scoop.

It takes 5 years to "vest" or become part of PSRS.  Then your eligible for retirement benefits - though we are not sure about how that differs from someone who has been in 25 years or more.  Once vested, PSRS takes the average of the highest 3 years to determine the retirement benefit.

In ISD, this is how all this played out:

Sharon Byrd, former principal at Sugar Creek, left Kansas City in 2007 and joined the ISD.  She's been in the district 5 years.  Now, she could have been or should have been booted out last year - but was given some fluff job for this year - to get her to year 5 - and vested.  So now she should be able to draw both retirement from PSRS and the Kansas City system (which is separate from PSRS).  (Does anyone know what she was even doing this year?)

Ron Albertus, principal at Korte, joined ISD in 2011.  He had previously retired from as superintendent of a rural district in Illinois.  (Whoa! Culture shock!)  All bets are on that he'll retire in 2017.  (That seems like a long way off.)

Greg Netzer, soon-to-be retired principal at Van Horn, retired from Kansas City, KS school district and has been with Independence - you guessed it - 5 years.  He's vested.  But one saving grace is that the Kansas retirement system SUCKS - so he probably deserves this and more.

  1. At Southern Dr. Byrd at least backed up teachers with out-of-control kids. Kathy never could be bothered.

    1. Dr. Byrd should not is not in the same category as Smith, the AD at Van Horn who resigned one week before school started two years ago because of the involvment of money, and the other Hinson buddies who needed jobs. Dr. Byrd ran a disciplined school. It is written Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world...". Dr. Byrd did conform to Hinson's or Herl's ways so she was moved. She deserved to finish her years. Independence would be better if it had more administrators like her and not the phoneys and BS'ers that are being hired and promoted by Herl. We are not Nazi Germany or Iraq where dictators use scare tatics to keep people quite for fear of losing, in this case their jobs. Why was the gentlemen at PRMS escorted out and put on a gag order for six weeks. Because his was involved with NEA and had some finacial evidence or other information? Nobody seems to know.

  2. I know a few principals and super who failed to back teachers on out of control kids, kids being evacuated from class because of students throwing chairs, destroying the rooms. Teachers hurt in the process, and the school board says Mr.hinson will take care of it, BS. Let my kid get injured and I'll sue, maybe then they can't afford those nice cars that the district is paying for. Total BS the state IRS provides a vehicle to some of its top employees for work travel. A school district come on, my tax dollars that should go to resources for teachers, and full time librarians. And why does blue springs not have positions for all this admin. Like we do

    1. If parents had a clue about even 1% of the serious and dangerous behaviors that go on in their kids' classrooms that the district refuses to do anything about, they would be pulling their kids out immediately. I know if my kid had been in some of the classrooms in my building I would have sued the pants off the district. The students and teachers are suffering from the district's short-sightedness.
